  1. Allagash Vrienden

I was lucky to find the Allagash Vrienden on tap at Jimmy the Greek’s this evening.  I saw that it was a limited quantity…and 9.3% so i jumped at the chance to try it.  I had it in my 22 oz stein so I can’t speak to the appearance.  I hadn’t heard about it before.  I could taste the alcoholic strength but it wasn’t overpowering.  It had a citrus flavor to me and came across slightly “soapy”.  That sounds like it should be bad, but I loved it!  I initially though that it was a hefe-weizen.

After doing some research - thanks beeradvocate.com! - I discovered that it’s a collabo between Allagash (ME) and New Belgium (CO) breweries.  Those are two of my favorite breweries and I’m happy they joined forces to produce a great beer!  It’s an American Wild Ale which involves adding “wild” yeasts or bacteria to the beer as it’s brewed.  Whatever they did, Allagash and New Belgium knocked it out the park!
